Automation-driven Shock Propagation through Multinational Production. Draft is coming soon!
Astract I develop a theoretical framework that embeds endogenous automation decisions into a task-based model with heterogeneous multinational enterprises. I show that automation reshapes the transmission of financial shocks across countries: highly automated MNEs propagate headquarters-country shocks more strongly through vertical linkages, while remaining less exposed to host-country labor market disruptions. The model identifies a novel automation-amplifying channel: financial crises in key headquarters countries induce highly automated and trade-intensive MNEs to contract production and sourcing disproportionately. This behavior amplifies both the trade collapse and output decline in host economies. The framework provides a new perspective on the Great Trade Collapse and the role of MNEs in the international propagation of financial shocks.
